Postby MikeM74 » Wed Sep 10, 2014 3:56 pm

Hi. I have been hearing the advantages of Wordpress, such as Google likes it, etc. I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the pros and cons. Thank you :D

Okay there is a Wordpress .com and Wordpress.org, Which one should we use ?
And what if you started with .com and your site is there, what happens to the site you have on .com if you decide to go with .org ?

WordPress.com is a free hosting company. WordPress.org is the site the WordPress and all free plug-ins are on. It is recommended that you don't use a free hosting company like WordPress or blogger because you come across as not a site you want to trust or spend much time on. - It least that is what I understand about hosting. I use Hostgator, but Godday is good too.

If you are with a hosting company like Hostgator, you will be installing WordPress Through them using the Cpanel.

Then your ready to go. How you use WordPress is in your imagination. It is a real powerful platform. However note that WordPress 5.0 has several themes you can use to get you started. But you will probably want to get Artisteer as a theme creator in the near future. However it is not free - that's the down fall.

Also once you get WordPress install there are a few plug-ins you will want to download from WordPress.org. This is all done through your site via the Admin area. If you don't know how to get into the Admin area, Just type your site url (domain name - example: http://myarrow.com) in the URL field to bring your site up. From there go to the end of your domain name and add /wp-admin (example: http://myarrow.com/wp-admin) From there just enter your username and password that you use when you installed WordPress through hostgator.

In the future to get into the admin area, just type in the url field as shown above, for example http://myarrow.com/wp-admin

What plug-in will you need - we will wait until you are ready, then ask use again.

There are serious differences between Wordpress.com and .org.

Assuming, since you're here, that you want to make money with your site, Wordpress.com would be a disaster.

Since they pay for the hosting of your site, they've decided that, not only can you not monetize your site in any way, but they will put their own ads on your pages. You have no control over this.

You have no option to change your theme or add any plugins.

Those reasons are more than enough to stay away from .com. That blogging platform is essentially for people who just want to talk about whatever concerns them and make it public and not pay for anything - and that's about it.

As far as transferring to a .org platform, I'd assume you could ftp your files over to your new host, although I've never been in that predicament to have tried it.

With Blogger.com, you're on Google property - again, no control over your site.

Hope that helps.

WordPress.com is a hosting site - as mentioned above you want to stay away from. WordPress.org is the company (website) that created WordPress and is where you get WordPress for your site. If you host your own websites on your own web-server, then you download WordPress from WordPress.org. Otherwise, you most likely will download WordPress from within your hosting company, like Hostgator or Godaddy.

WordPress.org is where you can download thousands of FREE Plug-ins. You normally download them from within your WordPress admin area. The first thing you do after WordPress is installed is to download some Plug-in from WordPress.org

Here are some that I download and activate before I do anything else on my site.
* All In One SEO Pack - must get on every site - The search engines like Google and Bing read it to know what to display about your site on the Results page and in part for site ranking

* Ultimate Tiny MCE - Turns the Text Editor in WordPress in to a more advance editor.

* Geo-redirect -I use this on some site that I want to direct certain IPs to a different landing page on my site.

*Redirection -I use again only on certain sites.
